e-Sim in South Africa

Technology

South African Network mobile operators are finally at the verge fully grasping the concept of e-sim.

In a bold move, uConnect has taken a page from rain and chosen to venture into a one of a kind mobile service that offers an exclusive service that most mobile operators don’t or are yet to fully embrace.

For those who don’t know, e-sim is short for embedded sim. First introduced by apple in 2018 on the XS and XR range of devices, the technology allows mobile users and operators to do away with the physical sim cards in favour of the built in embedded simcard. The benefits of this technology are that users can move from one network to another without needing to buy an actual sim card. If you’ve ever had to run to the shops just to buy a R1 simcard at pep during lunch hour, you’d understand the benefits better.

However, uptake on the technology has been slow in SA with Vodacom and MTN only recently making the option available but with conditions.

Enter uConnect. It allows users to download their e-sim as opposed to purchasing one from the store. The company also offers free 1 gig data and access to free airtime.

uConnect states that on iPhones, you can have up to 8 e-Sims, switch between carries effortlessly (without needing to physically take out the sim card), offer better security as e-sims are harder to clone and it’s easy to download a local sim card when you travel abroad.

Does your phone support e-sim? if so, will you be using this service? Let us know in our comment section.
